How To Complain To The RBI?

Answer By law4u team

Definition: Complaining to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) involves submitting a formal grievance to the central banking authority regarding issues related to banking services, financial institutions, or payment systems. The RBI has established channels to address such complaints efficiently.

Steps to Complain to the RBI:

1. Attempt to Resolve with the Bank

Before approaching the RBI, first, try to resolve the issue directly with the concerned bank or financial institution. Lodge a formal complaint with the bank's customer service department.

Banks are required to respond within a specific period (usually 30 days). Keep a record of all communications and responses.

2. Escalate to the Banking Ombudsman

If the bank fails to resolve your complaint or if you are dissatisfied with the resolution, you can escalate the issue to the Banking Ombudsman. The Banking Ombudsman is an RBI-appointed official who handles complaints against banks and financial institutions.

Visit the RBI's Banking Ombudsman Scheme website, select your region, and file your complaint online. You will need to provide details of your complaint, the bank's response, and supporting documents.

3. File a Complaint via the RBI CMS Portal

You can also file a complaint directly through the RBI’s Complaint Management System (CMS) portal. The CMS portal allows you to lodge complaints against any regulated entity, including banks, NBFCs, and payment system participants.

Visit the CMS portal on the RBI website, create an account, and fill in the required details about your complaint. You can track the status of your complaint through the portal.

4. Email or Write to the RBI

Alternatively, you can send a detailed email to the RBI at their official email address, or write a letter to the RBI’s Consumer Education and Protection Department. Provide all relevant details, including your contact information, the nature of the complaint, and any responses from the bank.

5. Seek Redressal through the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme

If your issue is still unresolved, you can approach the RBI under the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, which covers various financial services providers. This scheme allows for the centralized filing and resolution of complaints across different sectors.

Summary: To complain to the RBI, first, attempt to resolve the issue with your bank. If unsatisfied, escalate to the Banking Ombudsman, file a complaint via the RBI CMS portal, or contact the RBI directly through email or letter. Use the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme for broader grievances.
