How can consumers report online counterfeit product sales?

Steps to Report Online Counterfeit Product Sales

Report to the E-commerce Platform

Contact Seller or Platform: Most e-commerce platforms (e.g., Amazon, Flipkart, eBay) have dedicated systems to report counterfeit products. If you’ve purchased a counterfeit item or suspect a product is fake, you should:

  • Go to the order details page of the product in your account.
  • Select the option to report the item as counterfeit or misleading.
  • Provide details about why you believe the product is fake, such as discrepancies with the brand, poor quality, packaging, or signs of infringement.

Example: If you purchase a branded mobile phone online but later discover it is a counterfeit model, you can file a complaint on the platform stating that the phone is not an authentic product, attaching images and details as evidence.

File a Complaint with the Seller

If the e-commerce platform doesn’t act promptly, you can directly contact the seller. Many platforms allow you to raise a dispute and seek a refund for counterfeit items.

If the seller does not cooperate or denies selling counterfeit items, escalate the matter to the platform’s customer support and request an investigation. Platforms are required to remove counterfeit listings within a reasonable time.

Report to the Consumer Helpline

National Consumer Helpline (NCH): You can file a formal complaint about counterfeit products through the National Consumer Helpline (NCH), which is run by the Department of Consumer Affairs.

  • A dedicated grievance redressal team for counterfeit product complaints.
  • A refund and return policy for counterfeit products.

If the platform fails to resolve the issue within 15 days, you can escalate the complaint through their internal mechanism or approach an external authority.

Report to Intellectual Property Authorities
