Answer By law4u team

The Protection Officer plays a crucial role under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDVA). Appointed by the State Government, the Protection Officer acts as a bridge between the aggrieved woman, the court, the police, and service providers to ensure timely and effective relief for victims of domestic violence. Key Roles and Responsibilities of the Protection Officer: 1. Assisting the Aggrieved Woman: Helps the victim (aggrieved person) in filing a Domestic Incident Report (DIR). Assists in making an application to the Magistrate for reliefs under the Act (such as protection, residence, custody, maintenance, etc.). Provides information about her legal rights and available remedies. 2. Filing of Domestic Incident Report: Prepares and submits the DIR in the prescribed format to the Magistrate and forwards a copy to the police officer in charge of the concerned area. 3. Ensuring Safety and Protection: Ensures that the woman receives immediate protection and medical assistance if needed. Coordinates with police officers to enforce protection orders. 4. Coordinating with Service Providers: Connects the victim with shelter homes, legal aid, medical facilities, and counselling centers. Maintains a list of registered service providers and makes referrals as needed. 5. Monitoring the Orders of the Magistrate: Ensures that the orders passed by the Magistrate (such as protection orders, monetary relief, custody, residence orders) are properly enforced. Reports non-compliance of the Magistrate’s orders to the court. 6. Maintaining Records: Maintains proper records of cases, complaints, reports, and updates related to domestic violence cases. May be required to submit periodic reports to the court or the District Officer. Legal Provision: The role of the Protection Officer is defined under Section 8 and Section 9 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005. Qualifications and Appointment: Protection Officers are usually government officials or social workers appointed by the State Government. They work under the supervision of the Magistrate and District Protection Officer. Summary: The Protection Officer is a key official under the Domestic Violence Act, responsible for assisting the victim in legal procedures, filing reports, coordinating with service providers, and ensuring the enforcement of the court’s orders. Their role ensures that the woman gets timely relief, support, and protection from abuse.
