If you lose money in an online scam in India, quick action is very important because fast reporting can sometimes help freeze or recover funds. Steps to recover money: Immediately call 1930 cyber fraud helpline Report the transaction as soon as possible (best within 24 hours) File complaint on Cyber Crime Portal Register details of fraud, transaction ID, bank details, screenshots Inform your bank immediately Ask bank to: Freeze beneficiary account Flag suspicious transaction Initiate chargeback or reversal request (if possible) File FIR or cyber complaint at police station Especially Cyber Crime Police Station Legal framework: Information Technology Act, 2000 Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita How recovery happens: If money is still in recipient account → bank may freeze it If transferred through UPI/wallet → investigation can trace linked accounts Police may seize accounts and trace transaction chain Courts can order recovery or restitution in proven cases Important evidence to keep: Bank transaction receipt SMS alerts UPI reference number Chat messages or call recordings Fraud website/app details If bank does not help: File complaint with Banking Ombudsman (RBI grievance system) Approach Consumer Commission for deficiency in service Important tips: Report immediately (delay reduces recovery chances) Never share OTP, PIN, CVV again Avoid further contact with scammers Preserve all digital evidence safely Fast reporting is the most critical factor in recovering lost money.

Dear Client, if you have been online financial firm the most critical factor in recovery is acting within the golden hour that is the first 24 to 72 hours after the incident Your first step should be to call the National Cyber Crime Helpline number that is 1930. This centralized helpline is managed by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and is designed to block the fraudulent transaction by coordinating directly with banks and payment intermediaries Prompt reporting share significantly increase the chances of freezing the funds before they are moved further by this scammer. After calling the helpline number you must formally register your complaint at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal while filing ensure you have all transaction details ready especially the unique transaction reference number or transaction ID the date and time of fraud and the merchant or bank account details involved additionally contact your bank’s fraud department immediately to report the unauthorized transaction they may be able to initiate a dispute process especially for credit and debit card transactions retain all evidence such as screenshots auto conversation with the scammer transaction receipts and any email as this will be essential for your formal police complaint. If police fails to address the issue within reasonable time or if you suspect systematic negligence you can escalate the matter to the Reserve Bank of India Ombudsman. Furthermore, if the amount involved is significant or the situation is very complex consider consulting a legal expert to assist in filing a criminal petition in the local court which can empower the judiciary to direct banks to freeze accounts and facilitate the return of property.
