Cyber Police Stations are specialized police units established to investigate and prevent cyber crimes committed through computers, mobile phones, the internet, and digital networks. Their primary roles include: Registering complaints relating to cyber offences. Investigating cyber crimes and collecting digital evidence. Tracing offenders through digital forensic techniques. Coordinating with internet service providers, banks, social media platforms, and other agencies. Assisting victims in reporting and mitigating cyber fraud. Conducting public awareness programs on cyber safety and online fraud prevention. Cyber Police Stations commonly deal with offences such as: Online financial fraud. UPI and internet banking fraud. Credit or debit card fraud. Identity theft and impersonation. Social media account hacking. Email hacking. Online stalking and cyber bullying. Phishing and fake websites. Ransomware and malware attacks. Data theft and unauthorized access to computer systems. Online extortion and blackmail. Obscene or sexually explicit online content, including offences against women and children. During an investigation, the Cyber Police may: Seize electronic devices such as computers, mobile phones, hard drives, and storage media in accordance with law. Obtain digital records from service providers. Preserve electronic evidence. Send devices for forensic examination. Record statements of witnesses and suspects. Arrest accused persons where legally justified. Victims should report cyber financial fraud immediately, as prompt reporting increases the chances of freezing fraudulent transactions and recovering funds. Cyber Police Stations have jurisdiction over offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), the Information Technology Act, 2000 (where applicable), and other relevant laws. A person can file a complaint: At the nearest Cyber Police Station. At any police station, which can register a Zero FIR where appropriate and transfer the case to the competent police station. Through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal for eligible cyber crime complaints. Cyber Police Stations work closely with banks, payment service providers, telecom operators, digital forensic laboratories, and other law enforcement agencies to investigate and prevent cyber crimes across India.
