Yes. A couple can request police protection if they have a genuine apprehension of threat to their life or liberty due to their marriage. Adult couples who marry of their own free will have the right to seek protection from the police, regardless of their religion, caste, or community. A request for protection can be made by: Submitting a written representation to the Superintendent of Police or the local police station. Approaching the High Court by filing a writ petition if the police fail to provide protection despite a genuine threat. The police do not automatically provide protection to every couple. They assess whether there is a real and credible threat to the couple's safety. If the court is satisfied that there is a genuine threat, it may direct the police to provide appropriate protection to ensure the couple's life and personal liberty. Police protection is meant to safeguard the couple from threats, harassment, violence, or unlawful interference. It does not validate or invalidate the marriage itself. If either party is a minor or the marriage violates any applicable law, the authorities may take action in accordance with the law instead of providing protection. Couples should keep documents such as proof of age, identity, address, and marriage-related documents readily available when seeking police protection. The right to seek police protection is based on the constitutional right to life and personal liberty, and courts have repeatedly held that consenting adults are entitled to choose their life partner without unlawful interference from others.
