Senior citizens who face threats, harassment, abuse, or fear for their safety can seek police protection in India. They may request protection in the following ways: Submit a Written Complaint File a written complaint with the Station House Officer (SHO) of the nearest police station. Clearly describe the threat, harassment, or incidents causing concern. Attach any supporting evidence, such as messages, call recordings, CCTV footage, or medical records. Approach Senior Police Officers If no action is taken by the local police, the complaint may be submitted to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), or Commissioner of Police, depending on the area. Seek Protection Under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 If the threat or neglect is from children or relatives, senior citizens may seek relief under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, in addition to approaching the police. Approach the Court If there is a serious threat to life or personal liberty and the police fail to provide protection, the senior citizen may approach the High Court by filing an appropriate writ petition seeking directions to the police. Contact Emergency Services In case of immediate danger, contact the police emergency helpline or the nearest police station without delay. Police may take steps such as: Assessing the nature of the threat. Providing patrolling near the residence, where necessary. Taking preventive action against persons issuing threats. Registering an FIR if a cognizable offence is disclosed. Taking action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), where applicable. Senior citizens should preserve all available evidence, including: Threatening messages or emails. Call records. CCTV footage. Medical reports. Details of witnesses. Police protection is generally provided based on the seriousness and credibility of the threat. Where a genuine risk to the life or safety of a senior citizen is established, the police are expected to take appropriate preventive and protective measures in accordance with the law.
