Women in India are protected against online harassment through the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), the Information Technology Act, 2000 (where applicable), and other relevant laws. Online harassment may include: Sending abusive or threatening messages. Cyber stalking. Creating fake social media profiles. Sharing private photos or videos without consent. Publishing obscene or sexually explicit content. Online blackmail or extortion. Doxxing (publishing personal information without consent). Morphing or editing images to harass or defame. Impersonation on digital platforms. Depending on the facts of the case, the offender may be prosecuted for offences such as: Stalking. Criminal intimidation. Sexual harassment. Voyeurism, where applicable. Defamation. Extortion. Publication or transmission of obscene or sexually explicit material. Identity theft or cheating through digital means. The punishment depends on the specific offence committed and may include: Imprisonment. Fine. Both imprisonment and fine. A woman facing online harassment should: Preserve evidence such as screenshots, chats, emails, URLs, usernames, and call records. Avoid deleting messages or other digital evidence. Block the offender on the relevant platform. Report the content using the platform's reporting mechanism. Report the incident to the nearest Cyber Police Station or any police station. File a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, where applicable. If the harassment involves intimate images or videos: Report the matter immediately to the police and the online platform. Request removal of the content from the platform. Preserve copies of the evidence before seeking removal, if it is safe to do so. If the harassment involves immediate threats to life or safety: Contact the police emergency helpline without delay. Inform the police of all available details about the offender and the threats received. During the investigation, the police may: Register an FIR if a cognizable offence is disclosed. Obtain information from social media platforms, internet service providers, and telecom operators. Trace digital evidence. Identify and prosecute the offender. Women have the right to a fair investigation, protection of their privacy during the legal process where required by law, and access to legal remedies against online harassment.
