The Union Territories (Direct Election to the House of the People) Act, 1965

This Act may be called the Union Territories (Direct Election to the Houseof the People) Act, 1965.

In this Act (a) "parliamentary constituency" has the same meaning as in the Representation of the PeopleAct, 1950 (43 of 1950); (b) "sitting member" means a person who immediately before the commencement of this Actis a member of the House of the People; (c) "Union territory" means any of the Union territories of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands,1[Lakshadweep] and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

At the next general election to the House of the People and thereafter, the seats allottedunder section 3 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (43 of 1950) to the Union territories inthe House of the People shall be seats to be filled by persons chosen by direct election and for thatpurpose each Union territory shall form one parliamentary constituency.
