What Is The CDS Exam?

The Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam is one of the most prestigious exams conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to select candidates for various branches of the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The exam serves as a gateway for individuals aspiring to serve as officers in these forces and is conducted twice a year.

What Is the CDS Exam?

The CDS exam is a competitive examination designed to recruit candidates for three key military academies:

• Indian Military Academy (IMA) – for the Indian Army
• Indian Naval Academy (INA) – for the Indian Navy
• Air Force Academy (AFA) – for the Indian Air Force
• Officers Training Academy (OTA) – for the Indian Army (for short-service commission)

The CDS exam assesses candidates on their knowledge of various subjects, general awareness, and aptitude for military service. It is a two-stage process: a written exam followed by an SSB interview for those who qualify the written test.

Eligibility Criteria for CDS Exam:

Nationality:

Indian citizens, subjects of Nepal/Bhutan, Tibetan refugees (before 1962), and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) who migrated from other countries are eligible to apply.

Age Limits:

• Indian Military Academy (IMA): 19 to 24 years (as of the 1st January of the exam year).
• Indian Naval Academy (INA): 19 to 22 years.
• Air Force Academy (AFA): 19 to 23 years.
• Officers Training Academy (OTA): 19 to 25 years.

Educational Qualifications:

• IMA: Graduate degree from a recognized university.
• INA: Degree in Engineering from a recognized university.
• AFA: Graduate degree with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level or a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• OTA: Graduate degree from a recognized university.

Marital Status:

Candidates must be unmarried at the time of joining.

Physical Fitness:

Candidates must meet the required medical and physical standards as specified by the respective forces.

CDS Exam Process:

Stage 1: Written Examination:

The written exam is held in offline mode and consists of three papers (for IMA, INA, AFA) or two papers (for OTA).

• For IMA, INA, AFA:
  • English (100 marks) – Tests the candidate's command over the English language.
  • General Knowledge (100 marks) – Covers topics such as history, geography, economics, polity, science, and current affairs.
  • Elementary Mathematics (100 marks) – Topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
• For OTA:
  • English (100 marks)
  • General Knowledge (100 marks)

The duration for each paper is 2 hours.

Note: There is negative marking in the CDS exam for incorrect answers.

Stage 2: SSB Interview:

Candidates who clear the written exam are shortlisted for the Service Selection Board (SSB) interview, which assesses their personality, leadership potential, and fitness for the armed forces.

The SSB interview consists of:

• Psychological Tests – Includes the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test (WAT), and Situation Reaction Test (SRT).
• Group Tasks – Involves outdoor activities, Group Planning Exercises (GPE), and Progressive Group Tasks (PGT) that assess teamwork and leadership.
• Personal Interview – A face-to-face interview with senior officers to evaluate the candidate’s motivation, personality, and decision-making ability.

Stage 3: Medical Examination:

Candidates recommended by the SSB undergo a medical examination to ensure they meet the required physical and medical standards for military service.

Final Selection:

Based on the performance in the written exam, SSB interview, and medical examination, a final merit list is published. Candidates who make it to the merit list are selected for training at the respective academies.

Training at the Academy:

After selection, candidates undergo rigorous training at the respective academies:

• IMA: 1-year training before being commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army.
• INA: 3-year training to become an officer in the Indian Navy.
• AFA: 1-year training before being commissioned as an officer in the Indian Air Force.
• OTA: 49-week training before being commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army (for short-service commission).

Example:

A candidate from Mumbai, who has completed his graduation in engineering, applies for the CDS exam to join the Indian Navy. He clears the written exam with a good score in Mathematics, General Knowledge, and English. After being shortlisted, he goes through the SSB interview, where he exhibits strong leadership and teamwork skills. Following his successful medical examination, he is placed in the merit list and selected for training at the Indian Naval Academy.
