The University Entry Scheme (UES) is a specialized recruitment program by the Indian Army and Indian Navy aimed at selecting young and talented engineering students directly from college campuses. This scheme targets pre-final year students and offers a seamless path into the officer cadre of the Indian Armed Forces without a written entrance exam.
It is designed to tap into the technical knowledge and fresh perspective of engineering students and prepare them for a career that combines patriotism, leadership, and advanced technology.
Only male candidates (as per current rules; may change in future).
Must be in the pre-final year (3rd year) of a B.E./B.Tech program.
Should be from AICTE-approved institutions.
Must meet minimum academic percentage (usually 60% aggregate or more).
Must be medically fit as per military standards.
Indian Army
Indian Navy
(Note: Indian Air Force previously had similar entry routes but now prefers AFCAT and other schemes.)
The first stage usually involves a campus screening or preliminary interview conducted at engineering colleges by defence recruitment teams.
Shortlisted candidates are called for the SSB Interview, which includes:
No written exam is required.
Candidates who clear the SSB must undergo a detailed medical exam at a military hospital to ensure they meet physical and medical standards.
Selected students receive a provisional offer. They must complete their final year successfully without backlogs to receive the final joining instructions.
Upon graduation and verification, candidates join the respective training academies:
Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun for Army
Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala for Navy
Training Duration: Approximately 1 year, including physical training, leadership skills, tactics, weapons handling, and discipline.
After successful training, candidates are commissioned as officers, usually in the rank of Lieutenant (Army) or Sub-Lieutenant (Navy).
A student named Rahul, studying B.Tech in Electronics at a recognized college, is in his 3rd year when the Indian Navy visits for UES recruitment. He clears the initial interview and is called for SSB at Bangalore. After 5 days of evaluation, he is recommended and declared medically fit. He completes his engineering course and reports to the Indian Naval Academy for training. After a year, he is commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Navy, beginning his journey as a defence officer.
