Updating the nominee in the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is an important step in ensuring that your EPF savings are transferred to the right person in the event of your unfortunate demise. The process of updating a nominee is straightforward, and it can be done online through the EPFO portal, or by submitting the required forms physically. Keeping your nominee details updated is crucial for a smooth transition and to avoid any complications in the future.

Steps to Update Nominee in EPF:

Log in to the EPFO Portal:

To update or change your nominee details, you first need to log in to the EPFO member portal. You can do this by visiting the official EPFO website and using your Universal Account Number (UAN) and password.

Visit the EPFO portal: https://www.epfindia.gov.in

  • Click on the ‘For Employees’ section.
  • Select ‘Member UAN/Online Services’ and log in with your UAN and password.

Access the Nomination and Declarations Section:

Once you are logged in, navigate to the ‘Manage’ tab and select ‘Nomination’ from the drop-down menu. This will direct you to the page where you can view and update your nominee details.

Edit or Add a Nominee:

On the nomination page, you will be able to view your current nominee details. To make changes:

  • If you want to update the existing nominee, select the ‘Edit’ button next to their name.
  • To add a new nominee, click on the ‘Add Nominee’ option.

Here, you will need to provide the details of the new nominee, including their name, relationship with you, date of birth, percentage of the EPF balance allocated to them, and other relevant information.

Provide Nominee Details:

When adding a nominee, make sure to fill in the correct personal details of the nominee:

  • Name of the nominee
  • Relationship with the nominee
  • Nominee’s date of birth
  • Percentage of the EPF balance to be allocated to the nominee (in case of multiple nominees, the total percentage should add up to 100%).

Submit the Changes:

After entering the required details, click on ‘Save’ or ‘Update’ to save the changes to your nominee information.

E-Sign the Nomination:

Once the nominee details are updated, the EPFO portal will prompt you to e-sign the updated nomination form using your Aadhaar number. This is a mandatory step for validating the changes online.

You will need to verify the OTP sent to your registered mobile number linked with Aadhaar for authentication.

Confirmation:

After successfully updating and e-signing your nomination details, you will receive a confirmation message on the screen, and the changes will be reflected in your EPF account. A PDF copy of the updated nomination can also be downloaded for your records.

Offline Method (if unable to update online):

If you are unable to update the nominee online, you can also update the nominee by submitting Form 2 (EPF Nomination Form) to your employer. Your employer will then forward the form to the EPFO office for further processing.

Important Considerations:

  • Multiple Nominees: You can add more than one nominee to your EPF account. If there are multiple nominees, you must specify the percentage of the total EPF balance each nominee will receive. The total percentage must add up to 100%.
  • Changing Nominee: You can update or change your nominee details at any time. It’s advisable to keep your nominee details current, especially if your family situation or relationships change.
  • Nominee Eligibility: The nominee should be a legal person, such as a family member or a close relative, who will be entitled to receive the EPF amount in the event of the account holder’s death.
  • No Nominee: If a person does not designate a nominee for their EPF account, the amount will be transferred according to legal succession norms after the account holder's demise, which may delay the process.
  • In case of Death: If the EPF account holder passes away, the nominee can claim the EPF balance after submitting the required documents, such as the death certificate and identity proof.

Example:

Mr. Raghav, a government employee, has recently updated his nominee details in his EPF account. His original nominee was his father, but since his father has passed away, Raghav wants to update his spouse as the new nominee. He logs into the EPFO portal, navigates to the ‘Nomination’ section, and enters his wife’s details. After submitting and e-signing the form using his Aadhaar, the change is successfully made. Raghav is now assured that his wife will receive the EPF amount in case of his demise.

Conclusion:

Updating the nominee in your EPF account is a simple yet important process to ensure that your retirement savings are passed on to the right person. Whether done online or offline, make sure that the information is accurate and up to date. Regularly reviewing your nominee details will ensure that your loved ones can easily access your EPF balance if something happens to you.
