What Is the RTI Application Fee?

Answer By law4u team

Definition: The RTI (Right to Information) fee is the amount required to be paid when filing a request under the Right to Information Act, 2005, in India. This fee covers the cost of processing and providing the requested information.

RTI Fee Structure:

  1. Application Fee:
    • Standard Fee: The fee for filing an RTI application is ₹10.
    • Mode of Payment: Payment can be made via cash, demand draft (DD), Indian Postal Order (IPO), or through electronic means if the Public Information Officer (PIO) accepts it.
  2. Additional Charges:
    • Photocopy Charges: If copies of documents are provided, the charge is usually ₹2 per page.
    • Inspection Charges: If you wish to inspect records, a fee of ₹5 per 15 minutes may be charged.
    • Online Payment: Some public authorities may allow online payment for RTI fees.
  3. Fee for Information Above the Limits:

  4. Exemptions:
    • Below Poverty Line (BPL): Applicants who are below the poverty line are exempt from paying the RTI application fee. Proof of BPL status needs to be submitted along with the application.
  5. Fee Structure by Public Authority:
    • Specific Authority Fees: Different public authorities or departments may have their own specific fee structures for additional services such as digital copies or extensive information.

Summary: The standard RTI application fee is ₹10. Additional charges may apply for photocopies, inspection, and extensive information. BPL applicants are exempt from the application fee. Payment methods include cash, DD, IPO, or electronic means, depending on the public authority.
