How Can Individuals Check Their Income Tax Refund Status?

Answer By law4u team

After filing an Income Tax Return (ITR), individuals often await their income tax refund. Tracking the status of this refund is crucial to ensure that the process is progressing smoothly. There are several methods to check the refund status, and individuals can easily use online tools provided by the Income Tax Department for a quick update.

Methods to Check Income Tax Refund Status:

Through the Income Tax e-Filing Portal:

  • Step 1: Visit the official Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
  • Step 2: Log in using your PAN (Permanent Account Number) and password.
  • Step 3: Go to the View Your Status section under the My Account menu.
  • Step 4: You can view your refund status by selecting the Income Tax Returns option and checking the refund information.

Using the Income Tax Refund Status Portal:

  • Step 1: Visit the dedicated Income Tax Refund Status page on the official website.
  • Step 2: Enter the PAN and Acknowledgment Number of the tax return filed.
  • Step 3: The portal will display the status of your refund, including the date of issue, the refund amount, and the mode of payment.

Through SMS or Email:

After the processing of the Income Tax Return, the Income Tax Department sends an update via SMS or email about the refund status to the taxpayer’s registered mobile number or email ID. The messages may include details like the status of the refund, the amount, and the payment reference number.

By Calling the Income Tax Department Helpline:

Taxpayers can call the Income Tax Department's helpline at 1800 180 1961 to inquire about the status of their refund if they face issues online. They will need to provide their PAN and other relevant details for verification.

Using the TIN (Tax Information Network) Portal:

  • Step 1: Visit the TIN website (https://tin.tin.nsdl.com).
  • Step 2: Navigate to the Refund Status section.
  • Step 3: Enter the PAN, Assessment Year, and Acknowledgement Number to check your refund status.

Example:

If an individual has filed their ITR for the assessment year 2023-24 and is waiting for a refund, they can log into the Income Tax e-Filing Portal, input their PAN and Acknowledgment Number, and check if their refund has been processed. If it shows Refund Processed but the refund hasn't been received, they can track the payment status or call the helpline for further assistance.
