When filing a Right to Information (RTI) application in India, it is important to include certain key details to ensure that your request is processed efficiently and in compliance with the Right to Information Act, 2005. Below is a list of essential details that should be included in an RTI application: 1. Applicant’s Details: - Name: The full name of the applicant filing the RTI. - Contact Information: Include your contact number and address. Although it's not mandatory, providing contact information can help in case the Public Information Officer (PIO) needs to contact you for further clarification. 2. Address of the Public Authority: - The application must be addressed to the Public Information Officer (PIO) or the appropriate officer of the relevant public authority from which you seek information. 3. Specific Information Sought: - Clear and Specific Request: The application must clearly mention the specific information you seek. Vague or general queries may not be processed effectively. - Example: If you need a document, state its name, subject, date, or any other identifiable details that will help locate it. - Avoid: Broad questions like "Give me all records of XYZ department." Instead, specify particular records or documents you need. 4. Format of Information (if desired): - If you want the information in a particular format, such as a printed copy, digital copy (PDF, Excel, etc.), or photocopy of records, mention it in your application. - For example: "I request the information in PDF format sent to my email address." 5. Application Fee (if applicable): - Fee Payment: If the information sought is beyond the free limit, or if the information requires substantial copying or processing, you will be required to pay a nominal fee. - Mention how you plan to pay the fee, such as via a Postal Order or Demand Draft (if required by the PIO). Generally, the RTI fee is Rs. 10 for a normal request, but additional charges apply for copies, electronic records, or if the information exceeds a certain amount. - You can state, for example, "I am attaching a demand draft/IPO of Rs. 10 as application fee." 6. Time Frame and Reminder: - The RTI Act stipulates that the PIO must respond within 30 days of receiving the application (in case of normal requests) or 48 hours in case of life and liberty-related information. - While not mandatory, you may politely request the PIO to respond within the stipulated time frame, for example: "I would appreciate it if the information is provided within 30 days." 7. Signature: - Signature: It is necessary to sign the application before submitting it. If you are filing an RTI online, the signature may be digital or simply a part of your online submission. 8. Additional Information: - Exemption Clauses: If you believe the information you seek is exempt from disclosure under the RTI Act, you can ask the PIO to clarify why it might be exempt (although this is typically the PIO's responsibility to address). - Third-Party Information: If your RTI request involves information about a third party, mention that you are aware of this and that you are seeking their consent, if required, for disclosure (under Section 11 of the RTI Act). Sample Format for an RTI Application: ``` To, The Public Information Officer, [Name of the Department/Organization], [Address of the Department/Organization] Subject: Request for Information under the RTI Act, 2005 Respected Sir/Madam, I, [Your Name], am a citizen of India, residing at [Your Address]. I am requesting the following information under Section 6 of the Right to Information Act, 2005: 1. [Describe the information you need. Be as specific as possible.] 2. [If applicable, specify the format in which you would like the information.] I am attaching a [Postal Order/Demand Draft] of Rs. 10/- as the application fee for this request. I would appreciate it if the information is provided within the stipulated time frame of 30 days. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Contact Information] [Your Signature] ``` Additional Tips: - Be specific and concise: The more specific you are, the easier it will be for the PIO to locate and provide the information. - Use clear language: Avoid any ambiguity in your request. - Keep a copy of the RTI application: Always retain a copy for your records. - Keep the postal receipt: If submitting by post, keep the receipt for reference and tracking. By following these guidelines, your RTI application is more likely to be processed quickly and efficiently.

Dear Client, A correct RTI application should contain the name and full address of the applicant so that the response can be mailed. It should specify the precise information required — imprecise or overly wide-ranging requests can be rejected. The name of the public authority concerned should be indicated so that the request is made to the appropriate office. An application fee of typically ₹10 has to be made by cash, demand draft, postal order, or through online mode if available. Not required but a phone number or email ID is optional to facilitate follow-up action. A point worth noting is that the RTI Act does not necessitate reasons for seeking the information from the applicant. I hope this answer helps. In case of future queries, please feel free to contact us. Thank you.
