Senior citizens can significantly reduce the risk of cyber fraud by following basic online safety practices and staying alert to common scams. Never share confidential information such as: OTPs. Bank PINs. ATM or debit/credit card CVV numbers. Internet banking passwords. UPI PINs. Be cautious of unsolicited calls, emails, SMS, or WhatsApp messages claiming to be from: Banks. Government authorities. Police. Income Tax Department. Telecom companies. Courier services. Do not click on unknown links or download attachments received from unfamiliar sources. Verify the identity of anyone asking for money or personal information, even if they claim to be a friend or family member. Use strong, unique passwords for online accounts and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) wherever available. Keep mobile phones, computers, and banking apps updated with the latest security updates. Install applications only from official app stores and avoid downloading apps from unknown websites. Regularly check bank statements and transaction alerts to identify any unauthorized activity. Never allow unknown persons remote access to your phone or computer through screen-sharing or remote-access apps. Be cautious of common cyber frauds, including: Fake KYC update scams. UPI payment request scams. Investment and cryptocurrency scams. Lottery and prize scams. Fake customer care numbers. Romance and friendship scams. QR code scams. Job and work-from-home scams. If you suspect a cyber fraud: Immediately contact your bank or payment service provider to block the transaction or account if necessary. Report the incident to the nearest Cyber Police Station or any police station. File a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, where applicable. Preserve screenshots, transaction details, messages, call records, and other digital evidence. Family members should educate senior citizens about common online scams and encourage them to verify any unusual requests before taking action. Prompt reporting is important. In cases of financial cyber fraud, reporting the incident immediately can improve the chances of freezing fraudulent transactions and recovering the money.
