What is the procedure for export of goods in India?

Answer By law4u team

The procedure for export of goods in India can be broadly summarized as follows: Obtaining an Import-Export Code (IEC): The exporter must first obtain an IEC from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). An IEC is a 10-digit code that is mandatory for all importers and exporters in India. Identifying the correct Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) code: The exporter must identify the correct HSN code for the goods they wish to export. The HSN code is a globally accepted system of classifying goods based on their nature, quantity, and value. Determining the eligibility of the goods for export: The exporter must ensure that the goods they wish to export are eligible for export from India. Some goods are prohibited or restricted for export, and the exporter must obtain the necessary licenses or permits from the relevant authorities before exporting such goods. Arranging for payment: The exporter must arrange for payment for the exported goods. Payment can be made through various channels such as letter of credit, advance payment, or open account. Preparing the shipment: The exporter must prepare the shipment, including packaging the goods, completing the necessary documentation such as the invoice and the shipping bill, and arranging for transportation to the port of shipment. Clearing customs: The exporter must file the shipping bill with the customs authorities at the port of shipment. The shipping bill contains details such as the description of the goods, the value of the goods, and the exporter's details. The customs authorities will assess the value of the goods and the applicable customs duty, and release the goods once the duty has been paid. Shipping the goods: The exporter must arrange for the transportation of the goods from the port of shipment to the final destination. This can be done through various modes such as road, rail, or air. It is important to note that the procedure for export of goods may vary depending on the nature of the goods, the country of destination, and the applicable laws and regulations. It is advisable to consult with a customs broker or a trade expert to understand the exact procedure for exporting specific goods from India.
