In India, the Muslim Personal Law (Shariat) Application Act, 1937 governs matters related to marriage, succession, inheritance, and other personal matters of Muslims. As per Islamic law, a Muslim man can marry up to four women at the same time, provided he can treat all of them equally and fulfill their rights and needs. However, the Muslim Personal Law Board has stated that marrying more than one woman is not encouraged and should only be done in exceptional circumstances where it is necessary to maintain the well-being of the family and the individuals involved. It is also important to note that polygamy is not mandatory in Islam and is subject to certain conditions. In India, the Muslim man who wishes to marry more than one woman must obtain permission from his first wife and the concerned authorities. Without the permission of the first wife and the concerned authorities, any such marriage would be considered illegal and void. It is also important to note that any person, regardless of their religion, who enters into a marriage without fulfilling the legal requirements, could face legal consequences.
