How to file complaints for unauthorized online credit card transactions?

Answer By law4u team

Unauthorized online credit card transactions are a common type of digital fraud. Prompt action is essential to prevent financial loss and ensure refunds or chargebacks. The Consumer Protection Act 2019, RBI guidelines, and banking regulations provide frameworks for consumers to lodge complaints and dispute fraudulent charges effectively. Proper documentation, timely reporting, and using official grievance channels are critical for a successful resolution.

Steps to File Complaints for Unauthorized Online Credit Card Transactions

Immediately Contact the Bank or Credit Card Issuer

  • Call the customer care helpline and report the unauthorized transaction.
  • Request a temporary block on the card to prevent further fraud.
  • Obtain a complaint/reference number for follow-up.

Document All Transaction Evidence

  • Keep bank statements, email alerts, and screenshots showing the unauthorized transaction.
  • Note the transaction ID, date, amount, and merchant details.

Request Chargeback or Refund

  • Banks generally have a process under RBI’s guidelines for digital payments to reverse fraudulent charges.
  • Submit a written dispute form along with supporting evidence.

Lodge Complaint with the Consumer Forum (If Required)

  • If the bank fails to resolve the issue, file a complaint with the District, State, or National Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission under the Consumer Protection Act 2019.
  • Cite deficiency of service and unfair trade practice.

Report to Cybercrime Authorities (If Fraudulent Access Suspected)

  • File a report on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal if the unauthorized transaction resulted from hacking, phishing, or stolen card details.
  • Include all transaction records, complaint numbers, and communication with the bank.

Consumer Safety Tips

  • Regularly monitor credit card statements and transaction alerts.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for online banking and shopping.
  • Use only trusted websites or apps for online payments.
  • Never share OTP, PIN, or CVV details with anyone.
  • Report suspicious activity immediately to prevent further unauthorized charges.

Example

A consumer notices a ₹15,000 online charge on their credit card for an e-commerce purchase they never made.

Steps the consumer should take

  • Call the bank immediately, block the card, and obtain a complaint reference number.
  • Document the transaction details and save email/SMS alerts.
  • Submit a chargeback/dispute form to the bank along with supporting evidence.
  • If the bank does not resolve the issue within the stipulated time, file a complaint with the District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.
  • Report the incident on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal to alert authorities and prevent further misuse.
