What is the limitation period for filing a complaint in a consumer court in India?

Answer By law4u team

The limitation period for filing a complaint in a consumer court in India depends on the amount of compensation claimed by the consumer. The time limit for filing a complaint is as follows: If the compensation claimed is up to Rs. 1 lakh, the complaint must be filed within two years from the date on which the cause of action arose. If the compensation claimed is between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 10 lakhs, the complaint must be filed within two years from the date on which the cause of action arose. If the compensation claimed is above Rs. 10 lakhs, the complaint must be filed within two years from the date on which the cause of action arose. It is important to note that the cause of action is the event or occurrence that gives rise to the complaint, and the time limit starts from the date of the cause of action. If the complaint is filed after the expiry of the limitation period, the consumer court may dismiss the complaint as time-barred.
