Supreme Court

Answer By law4u team

The Supreme Court of India primarily uses the following languages: 1. English – Official Language of the Supreme Court As per Article 348(1)(a) of the Constitution of India, all proceedings in the Supreme Court shall be in the English language. This includes petitions, affidavits, judgments, orders, and arguments. 2. Use of Vernacular (Regional) Languages – Not Permitted Parties or advocates cannot argue or submit documents in Hindi or other regional languages. Translations may be annexed for understanding, but English remains mandatory for filing and oral arguments. 3. Special Requests for Interpretation (if needed) In rare cases involving parties who do not understand English, interpreters may be permitted to assist during proceedings. Key Legal Provision: Article 348(1)(a) – Supreme Court and High Courts shall use English unless Parliament provides otherwise (which it has not done so far for the Supreme Court). Summary: English is the only language used in the Supreme Court of India.

Answer By Ayantika Mondal

Dear Client, English is the official language of all Supreme Court proceedings as stated in Article 348 of the Indian Constitution. Only English may be used in pleadings, rulings and submissions. The Supreme Court upholds English as the only language for uniformity and clarity even though some High Courts allow regional languages for local proceedings. I hope this answer helps.
